I have orders to Balboa starting in Feb after my Orthopedics C school.... Does anyone know if I will be allowed BAH to live off base or do I have to make rank to E-4 to do so? If anyone knows someone in the area that might know a little info I would appreciate it. -HN Bryant

I was an E-3 in NSHS San Diego and was living off base.
If you are single, more than likely it will be extremely difficult to get since you can live in the barracks.
If you are married and / or have dependents, then you stand a very good chance for getting it.
One factor that might work to your advantage is if the barracks are full. I am sure there are other factors as well so some of the others will chime in as well.
BEQ REGULATIONS (QUARTERS)
Students are billeted at BEQ 41 upon arrival at NSHS, San Diego. Due to the limited quarters, students may be authorized to reside off base when the required manning levels are met. Single Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) is not automatic when checking onboard or because of previous authorization from your detaching command. BAH will be considered and approved when the required BEQ manning levels are met. Weekly field day is done on Thursdays and mandatory BEQ inspections are conducted on Friday mornings (rooms are inspectable at all times).
Geographical bachelors are also permitted to reside in quarters when space is available, but may be informed to vacate the BEQ at any time as manning levels increase.
More specific guidelines addressing the rules and regulations of the BEQ are available from the BEQ staff and the BEQ Welcome Aboard Package.

Another good option is to talk to your sponsor to get some information. If you don't have a sponsor then give the command a call to request one be assigned. It'll make your transition a little easier.

Thank you for the replies. I won't be in student statis I'll be working there as an ortho tech. So student berthing shouldn't fall under me right?
Check out the staff Welcome Aboard package: http://www.med.navy.mil/sites/nmcsd/Staff/Pages/welcomeAboard.aspx I also again recommend filling out the form to request a sponsor if you don't have one already.
In regards to your profile on the site, your title is related to the number of posts you have not your actual rank. Thus if you want to include your accomplishment of HN, you can include it in your signature block instead.

Once you get your PCS orders, you can contact PSD at the hospital to find out more information about what was requested since they will know the exact requirements.

zip code for san diego is 92136 :) if you are single and coming from a far away place, i recommend the pacific beacon http://www.pacificbeacon.com/
they have different priced apartments but you can call them and they will have an apartment ready for you to move into, the lease is only for 3 months and then it is month to month incase you want to move out somewhere else. one downside is you share the apartment with one roomate but i never see my roomate and you can always move if you dont like it :) easiest for pcs'ing if you are a single sailor.
