Hello, my son just joined the Navy as a Hospital Corpsman (5 year contract). He has 1 year to go as a senior in high school. He isvery excitedand I amVERY proud. When he was to enlist, the career counsler was trying to promote Navy Reserves, $20,000 bonus, etc so he could be a field medic for the Marines/Seabees. My son (and I) choose to go enlisted for the time being for various reasons. The recruiter mentioned he will be given the option to volunteer for the field medic if he wishes in the future. When this option is asked of my son in the future, will a new contract with bonus be offered at that time? We turned down other bonuses to go Navy (like Army Reserves) so bonuses don't mean that much to us-but I'm just curious. Thanks for your time. Kurt

Kurt,

I am trying to follow what he is doing.. He signed up for 5 years "Active Duty" correct, not the Reserves.

One thingas a AD member, he still might end up as a FMF Corpsman (Field Medic). Depends on the needs of the Navy when he is up for negotiating orders here. I would say 45-50% get Marines now.

Hope this helps..

Hello, yesDa Chief, he is enlisted for AD. I guess writing as a parent,we don't like the thought ofour son being "front line" medic although I understand the obvious importance of it (and am thankful for those that do it) (I am a volunteer EMT myself). Will he as a Corpsman giving the option of being in the hospital tent as a physician's assistantor does he have to run with the Marines as a field medic? Again, thanks for your time and this is a great web site. Kurt

Kurt,

With the MARINES, he will be out in the field, roll of the dice I am afraid. We also have BAS positions but usually the junior personel have to do time in the barrel.
