Campa relieves Scott as MCPON

Command Master Chief (SW/FMF) Joe Campa became the 11th Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy on Monday during a ceremony at the Washington Navy Yard.

Campa relieved Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (SS/AW) Terry D. Scott after being named to the position last month by Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Mullen.

“Master Chief Campa follows a legacy of tremendous service by MCPON Terry Scott,” said Mullen, who was guest speaker at the event.

“He has very big shoes to fill, and he knows it, but he has my every confidence that he will pick up where Terry Scott left off.”

Much of the ceremony was dedicated to honoring the service of Scott, who took office on April 22, 2002, when he took over for MCPON (SS/SW/AW) Jim Herdt.

Former CNO Adm. Vern Clark, who had picked Scott as the Navy’s top enlisted sailor, was also in the audience.

The office was officially transferred to Campa when a model 1917 Navy cutlass was passed between the master chiefs in front of Mullen. The cutlass will adorn the MCPON’s office at the Navy Annex in Arlington, Va., a spot it has occupied for the last 10 years since it was first used to signify the passing of the torch from one MCPON to the next.

As the Navy’s senior enlisted sailor, the MCPON serves as an adviser to the chief of naval operations and the chief of naval personnel in dealing with enlisted personnel and their families.

Campa will also be an adviser to the many boards dealing with enlisted personnel issues,; is the enlisted representative of the Department of the Navy at special events,; may be called upon to testify on enlisted personnel issues before Congress;and maintains a liaison with enlisted spouse organizations.

I know I'm late with this, but its about time we got a Corpsman as MCPON. I have met the last 2, most recentlyMaster ChiefScottback in Jan 06' at Camp Fallujah. Though they seemed on top of things Navy wide,I felt they were pro blue side and thats where theirfocus remained.Thats probably through no fault of their own, not allSailors have the privilege to serve with the Marines. I praise the newselection, I have read MCPON Campa'sbio. With where he has been, and what he has already done he is sure tounderstand and fulfill the needs of todays Sailors. Which includes that of the Fleet MarineForce.

I'm glad that we have a Doc for MCPON. The last one I heard, didn't really care/know about green side corpsman. He was in Al Asad in 2004. The guys who met him said that he didn't know what we( corpsman) were doing there. Called us dirt sailors. And when my brother asked him if there will be a chance or bonuses going to FMF, he stated that we don't work hard enough..... This was when we were about to do the push into Fallujah, when I was with 1/8.
