Gizmodo has again conducted a twelve city test (http://gizmodo.com/5428343/our-2009-12+city-3g-data-mega-test-att-won) and found that AT&T consistently offered the fastest 3G connections of the four biggest carriers. That's not too surprising, given that AT&T's HSDPA service offers faster maximum theoretical speed than Verizon or Sprint's EVDO service. The test does AT&T a favor by not poking at any of AT&T's notorious problem areas, namely coverage, customer service, handoff issues between EDGE and HSDPA, or issues with making actual phone calls (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNeWF7O5wV4). That said, AT&T still topped the speed rankings in traditionally congested markets like New York -- where other tests have shown AT&T 3G speed to take a hit due to market overload (see 2009 studies by Wired (http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2009/07/3g-speed-test) and PC World (http://www.pcworld.com/article/167391/a_day_in_the_life_of_3g.html)). All told, AT&T took the speed/latency/pageload crown in 6 of 11 cities tested. Verizon took the top spot in 4 markets, while T-Mobile and Sprint were the fastest in one city each.
