Were you surprised at the ending of this long running HBO series?

When the screen went dark I freaked out thinking that the satellite went out and then the credits started rolling and I was :swn: "AAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH" :swn:
What were they thinking - am I supposed to make up my own ending?
