So I am in the process of picking which enlistment option I want to take when joining the navy. I will have enough credit hours to have an assocaites degree and will eventually be getting a bachelors. What I want to know is 1) will I be able to recieve full GI bill and benefits with the NTC enlistment and 2) since 8404 is in shortage right now are they putting people into stop loss? Any help with these questions will be greatly appreciated.

Ok So I look back and see this that was never answered, but it is a important question so I want to answer it.

NCS is a Quasi Reserve/Active Program. Essentially it goes like this.

Boot / Corps School / FMSS / 15 months post School, your active duty just like any other active duty person. After the 15 months though you are discharged to the Drilling Reserves. When your discharged you will go home and live at home only to drill for 1 weekend a month 2 weeks a year for your active duty time, "UNLESS" your mobilized. Then your put back on Active Duty like any other Reservist who is Mobilized. It can be anywhere from 1 year to 2 years for mobilization. You cannot get out of the mobilization or drills you have signed your contract to such.

Also other info that is pertinent to the NCS program. Even though it says that you can Extend up to 24 months then Reenlist to the Active side, Prior to me getting out in April, NCS's were not being extended "UNLESS" they were serving with the Marines. If your at a Hospital, it is a "NO GO" for the most part.

You are not eligible for the full GI Bill, you are not Eligible for C-Schools, (They will tell you FMSS is a C-school, but it isn't.. ) and or even the SEALS. Early this year they converted a few HM's to Active to go SEAL, but that has stopped again. The "ONLY" way that I know now for HM's to go active away from the NCS program is if you volunteer for the "RECON" program. (This might have changed since I left NHCS in April though!).

Ok Active,
5 year Obligation to the Active Duty Navy after you have a 3 year obligation to the IRR. (Reservist who does not drill unless you affiliate to a Reserve unit, your choice!). You are eligible for all C-Schools if you qualify or there is a seat available.. Let me clarify this though, it is the "NEEDS OF THE NAVY" not you for C-Schools. If the Navy needs FMF Corpsman over Lab Tech's or X-Ray Tech's, then your going to FMSS and then to the Marines. Navy First your needs second.

You can reenlist or extend, you are eligible for the full GI Bill. (1200.00 paid in and you receive over 36,000 in Funds for school later!)

So all in all, what I experienced was that most Corpsman who signed up for NCS, and new about the 15 month then to Reserves, Wanted to go Active once they got a taste of what it is like to be active. Unfortunately you cannot go back.

Be careful what you sign at MEPS.. They might tell you that you can ship early if you do the NCS thing, trust me in the long run, Wait the time if your in it for the GI Bill or a career.

Later and Good Luck!
