If I am reading NAVADMIN 142/07 and ALNAVRESFOR 14/00 correctly, all SelRes billets E4 HM-0000 and SelRes HM-8404, E4 to E6, should immediately submit a NAVPERS 1336/3 Special Request chit to Admin in order to apply for the Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR) Kicker Program. You must be in a qualifying billet to be eligible. A chit is attached

The "Kicker" is an additional amount of money that increases your basic MGIB monthly benefit. I am not sure of the current rate, but the MGIB-SR Kicker could give you an extra $7,200 - $12,600 in educational benefits and can be used with other programs (ie. MGIB-AD & REAP). No buy in is required (ie. free) and (if eligible for both) there is no prohibition against receiving both the active duty and select reserve kickers.

Basically this is free money for qualified applicants but you only if you ask for it....

Also, DoD policy now aligns with Department of Veterans Affairs rules, which say National Guard members and reservists are eligible to receive MGIB-SR education benefits for the period covering the amount of time they were mobilized on active duty, plus four months.

MGIB-SR benefits may now be used by somebody that leaves the Selected Reserve for the amount of time that they were mobilized on active duty, plus four months. Previously all educational benefits would immediately terminate upon changing duty status (ie. separated from reserves or dropped to IRR).

Reservists normally have a maximum of 14 years from initial eligibility (Boot Camp) to use their MGIB-SR benefits. However, that limit might also be extended by the amount of time Guard or Reserve members were mobilized on active duty, plus four months.

For all our police officers and fire fighters: You may be paid MGIB or REAP educational benefits as a full time student while attending your training academy. The academy needs to be associated with an accredited college or university to qualify. It is also possible to apply for benefits retroactively (after graduation) in certain circumstances.
