Whats it like
Whats the life like on a sub as a HM? Whats your recreational and professional activities? Such as any thing special in a sub over surface ship?

As far as I am aware, the only rated HM on a sub is the Independent Duty Corpsman who is responsible for a myriad of duties which include all medical related issues, pest control, food service inspections, and probably the biggest in radiation health. Sub IDC school is over a year in length, and highly challenging - you have to be at least an E-5 with over 6 years in the Navy before applying.
I can't speak to recreational activities, but I'd assume that they'd be similar to any other Sailor. Professionally, there's a lot to keep up with, ensuring continuing medical education is up to date etc. Subs are a much more exclusive community than ships which are an exclusive community over hospital or Marine billets. The opportunity is there, just harder to get to.
