I hate these, I really do.  Our Hearts and prayers go out to HM3 Garcia’s Family, Friends, and Shipmates.

The Associated Press

HONOLULU — A Hawaii-based sailor has died in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense announced Thursday that Petty Officer 3rd Class Anthony C. Garcia of Tyndall, Fla., died Wednesday while supporting combat operations in Farah Province.

The 21-year-old Garcia served as a corpsman with Marines assigned to Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe.

Garcia joined the Navy in 2006 and reported to Hawaii in February. His awards include the Purple Heart Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

About 1,000 Hawaii Marines with the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment arrived in Helmand and Farah provinces in late May. They are part of a surge of 21,000 U.S. troops sent by President Obama.

More info as it becomes available.

To the family and friends of Anthony, please know that he is not forgotten. On July 31st, I participated in the 1st Annual Warrior Walk in Lakeland, FL. Each one of us wore the name of a fallen servicemember from Florida. I had the honor of wearing Anthony's name during the walk. I am an Air Force veteran and hope to always do my part in keeping the memory of our fallen alive. His service and ultimate sacrifice will NEVER be fogotten or in vain. Thank you Anthony.

To all who knew HM3 Garcia, he was a great Corpsman. I am one of the Corpsman that worked with him in 2D BN 3D Marines. I was also one of his mentors. He was an outstanding Corpsman, and all of his Marines looked up to him. He truly was the definition of a “Doc”. Be known that he is not forgotten and all of us here at 2/3 still miss him greatly. The night I loaded him on the bird and said my final goodbye was one of the most heartbreaking in Helmand Province. Also be known that HM3 Garcia was presented his Enlisted Fleet Marine Force Warfare Specialist posthumously with his Purple Heart, because his actions with his Marines were what an FMF Corpsman should be. God Bless and RIP.
